This club is not
This is not a riding club. There are no lessons, no training or gear tips for horse training or photography. There is nothing you have to keep up with.
You do not need to compete, improve or be ready for the next thing. You can come when you feel like it and leave when you have had enough.
What you will find is a quiet place to see Icelandic horses, in a herd, in nature. Stories, sounds, my process, inspiration and the behind the scenes of my world, for people who like to look a little longer.

Iris discovered Icelandic horses in the library in the 90’s and became addicted to them on a stable in 1997. She. started this journey on the bench at the world championship for Icelandic Horses in 2007 it sparked a fire in her to want to create beautiful photographs of Icelandic Horses discover more about them and what makes them so unique and special for her, to share and show the world how cool , special this breed is. Later with her camera in nature in a field with Icelandic horses this project got more direction.

For Iris, her Icelandic horse project is more than photography. It is a long-term dedication to documenting the Icelandic horse in a way that feels respectful, powerful and true. She wants to share this with other like minded people.
To inspire and let other people slow down, relax and enjoy.

Iris van Velzen is a Dutch photographer and the founder of the Icelandic Horse Project.
Iris works with Icelandic horses the way she moves through life: without hurry. She does not chase images; she allows them to unfold. She spends time in the landscape long before she lifts her camera, watching the herd and noticing the small shifts that reveal character and connection.
Her work is shaped by patience, consistency and a genuine love for the breed.

A selection of photographs from The Icelandic Horse Project has been recognised in international competition, including by the International Pet Photography Awards ( IPPA ) in 2023, 2024 and 2025.
Iris van Velzen holds the accreditation of International Associate of Pet Photography awarded by the International Pet Photography Accreditation in September 2025.
